Sling handling tools address the moment of highest hand exposure in any lift — when the sling is being placed on or removed from the hook.
The tool engages the sling eye, leg, or body through a formed hook, jaw, or grip head, allowing the worker to lift, guide, and place the sling onto or off the crane hook from a standing position at safe separation distance. The hands hold the tool handle. They do not enter the space between the sling and the hook.
Sling handling and placement tools are long-handled devices designed to present, position, hook, unhook, and retrieve lifting slings at and around the crane hook block — removing the need for the worker's hands to enter the hook zone during sling attachment and detachment operations.
The hook block is where the crane's mechanical energy concentrates. During sling attachment and detachment, the hook may be stationary — but it is never inert. It hangs under tension from the hoist wire. The sling bears the weight of whatever has just been set down. The gap between sling and hook, between sling and load, between multiple sling legs converging at a single attachment point — these are all closing interfaces under load.
Sling handling became a hands-on task not because it required hands, but because no tool existed to replace them. Workers reached up, threaded sling eyes onto hooks, pulled legs into position, and unhooked loaded slings by hand. The task was treated as inherently manual. It is not. It became manual by default, and it remained manual by habit.
Sling handling tools exist to make the non-contact method the default. The worker's reach is extended to the hook. The hand stays on the handle. The sling eye reaches the hook without fingers threading it there.
