What Is a Tagline?
A tagline is not a safety rope. It is not a fall arrest device. It is not a restraint against load drop. It does not prevent the load from falling, swinging beyond control, or striking a worker who is incorrectly positioned. It provides one thing only: a method of remote influence over load movement.
A tagline is a rope or line attached to a suspended load, used to control the load's direction, rotation, and swing during a crane or hoist lift — allowing the worker to influence load movement remotely without placing hands on the load or entering the immediate load contact zone.

Why Does It Exist?
A suspended load under crane control moves where the crane moves it. But cranes cannot manage the final details of load orientation — the precise rotation that aligns a flange, the small correction that squares a structural member, the steady resistance that prevents a load from spinning freely in wind or after acceleration. Those corrections require human input.
Without a tagline, that human input is applied through direct contact. The worker places a hand on the load — pushing, pulling, rotating, steadying. The worker is now inside the load contact zone during a live lift. The load is suspended above them. Any crane movement, sling slip, or sudden load shift occurs with the worker at immediate risk.
The tagline does not eliminate the worker's role in the lift. It relocates the worker's point of influence — from the load surface to the end of a rope. That relocation is the entire exposure benefit.

What Workers Did Before This Control
Prior Practice — Direct Hand Contact on the Suspended Load
Before tagline doctrine was established as a required control, workers guided suspended loads by standing beside them and applying hand pressure directly — pushing, pulling, rotating, and steadying the load by contact. This was considered the correct method; the worker was physically controlling the load. The tagline did not eliminate the worker's role. It relocated their point of influence from the load surface to the end of a rope — the minimum change required to remove the hand from the hazard zone while preserving the guidance function.
